Preparing for a Catholic Marriage

If you're a Catholic who is preparing to get married, Congratulations! It is our hope that you will want to celebrate your new beginning in and with the Church. There are some things to keep in mind. First, a Catholic marrying another Catholic must be married in the Catholic Church. In order to prepare to be married in the Catholic Church, one is required to meet with a priest/deacon at least six months prior to the wedding. This is in order to make sure that the couple is free to marry. The priest / deacon witnesses the vows; it’s the couple who marries one another.  During the period of preparation the couple will share their story as individuals and as a couple. They will discuss their plans for living out the martial commitment as Catholic Christians and receive helpful advice from other married persons by attending Pre-Cana. You will also prepare the liturgy. Whether you choose to celebrate your love with a Nuptial Mass or Ceremony; you plan for a life together and not just a day.

Bride holding wedding bands

A Catholic who is marrying a non-Catholic can be married either in the Church or outside a church edifice, with appropriate dispensations. Once again, that person should speak with a priest or deacon at least six months prior to the wedding.

If either party has had a previous marriage in the Church, an annulment from the Tribunal will have to be obtained prior to receiving a date for the new wedding.
